The project involved the design, manufacture, and installation of a timber clad modular building, carefully specified to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment and the existing yacht club building.
The Challenge
As the club continued to grow, additional space was required to support training activities and provide a dedicated area for members and visitors.
The key requirement was to create a practical and comfortable new facility while ensuring the building was sympathetic to the existing architecture and the coastal surroundings. The solution needed to provide the benefits of modular construction without looking like a traditional portable building.
The Solution
Working closely with Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Excel Modular designed and manufactured a bespoke timber clad modular building tailored to the club’s requirements.
The timber exterior finish was selected to complement the existing building and help the new facility blend naturally into its surroundings, creating a cohesive extension to the site.
Manufactured at Excel Modular’s Hull facility, the building was constructed in a controlled factory environment before being transported and installed on site. This approach helped minimise disruption to the club’s day-to-day activities while providing a high-quality, durable building solution.
The completed facility provides a welcoming and functional training space, giving the yacht club additional capacity to support its members and future activities.
The Result
The new timber clad modular building has successfully expanded Royal Harwich Yacht Club’s facilities, providing a dedicated training area that meets the club’s operational needs while enhancing the existing site.
The project highlights the versatility of modular construction — delivering bespoke buildings that can be designed to suit their surroundings, from commercial and educational settings to leisure and community facilities.

Excel was initially approached to supply two linked jackleg cabins; however, following several design proposals, the client ultimately selected a purpose-built modular complex for their new offices in Darlington.
The client first reached out to Excel in 2024 with only minimal details confirmed. At the time, we didn’t know which artist was involved—only that it would be a short-term hire for a concert taking place in Hull.
